On March 12, 2026, a scientific seminar on the topic “The History of Urban Planning and Modern Architecture of Azerbaijan” was organized at the Department of Humanities of Baku Business University.
The seminar was dedicated to the comparative analysis of the historical stages of development of Azerbaijan’s architectural heritage, urban planning traditions, and modern urbanistic approaches. During the event, faculty members of the department — PhD in Technical Sciences Nasimi Rzayev, Professor Nigar Akhundova, PhD in Technical Sciences Aygun Kamandari, and Ganira Mirzaxanli — delivered presentations and shared scientific-theoretical and practical perspectives on the topic with participants.
Within the framework of the seminar, extensive analyses were conducted on the formation of the Azerbaijani urban planning school, the urban development characteristics of Baku and other historical cities, Soviet-era city planning, and modern architectural trends during the independence period. At the same time, issues such as the transformation of the urban environment under globalization, principles of sustainable urban planning, and the preservation of national style in modern architecture were discussed.
The speakers noted that Azerbaijani architecture, while possessing a rich historical heritage, continues to develop today through the synthesis of innovative approaches and international architectural trends. It was emphasized that along with preserving historical and cultural heritage, ensuring functionality and ecological sustainability has become a key direction of urban planning policy.
At the end of the seminar, an exchange of ideas took place among participants, questions were answered, and scientific discussions on the topic continued.
The main purpose of the event was to increase the scientific knowledge of students and academic staff in the field of urban planning and architecture, as well as to develop a scientific approach to contemporary urban challenges.
